March 2021Frank Bainimarama has set a low standard for Fiji - Under Bainimarama's dictatorship Fiji is now BROKE and $9 billion in debt, with:
Fijivillage.com reported that SODELPA’s Deputy Leader, Filimoni Vosarogo had suggested on his Facebook page that Fiji's most incompetent and useless Director of Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission Ashwin Raj read the Draft Police Bill that was out in the public domain and form a view on whether it violated the Bill of Rights.
In his usual childish arrogance Raj uses fancy big words to respond saying that Vosarogo should instead focus on building his crumbling political party and that he [Raj] does not need a lawyer-turned-politician to tell him what needs to be done. Dictator Frank Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed to fijivillage that his government has retracted consultations on the Draft Police Bill. Bainimarama claims that it was not endorsed by the Solicitor General and cabinet and that the draft bill was prepared by Police and does not represent his government's policy. Oh really!
Bainimarama wants us to believe that the draft police bill that was officially launched by the Minister for Defence, National Security, and Policing Inia Seruiratu in early March, was done against government policy. Yeah right! It received such a lot of criticism and objections after its launch that it has now been retracted. And again Bainimarama is trying to deflect all blame, this time on to the police. Present at the official launch, that is against government policy, according to Bainimarama, were the Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar, the New Zealand High Commissioner Jonathan Curr, United Nation Development Program (UNDP) representative, Nanise Saune-Qaloewai, the Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde, and senior officers of the organisation as well as the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces. Does this mean Bainimarama will now return the funding his corrupt government received for the consultations? Yeah right! Everyone in Fiji with half a brain knows that nothing, especially a draft Police Bill, can get done without the prior approval of the corrupt Bainimarama Government. No one would even dare risk their job and livelihoods! So it seems that Bainimarama is lying, again, this time its about the reasons for the Bill's retraction. It's in his nature to lie and to deflect blame away from his incompetence, on to others, anyone or anything! Just look at his record since 2000! New Zealand confirmed it was funding the consultation process for the Draconian Fiji Police Bill and maintained it had done nothing wrong, reports Radio NZ. Yeah right!
The draft Police Bill will give the Fiji police greater surveillance powers if passed in Fiji's Parliament that is controlled by the corrupt and violent Bainimarama dictatorship. The draft Police Bill will:
The launch of the Police Bill in Suva was attended by officials from the New Zealand High Commission, and has come under intense scrutiny from civil society groups and Opposition parties. Auckland-based Shailendra Raju a former advisor to the late Fiji prime minister Laisenia Qarase condemned Wellington's move. Raju said NZ could not use its donor status as an excuse to support the 'draconian' draft Bill which could turn Fiji into a police state. "The record of the Fiji government" says Raju "has shown there has never been any consultation where feedback from it has been taken onboard". A case in point is the constitutional process for the 2013 constitution, also funded by NZ. A draft was drawn up by Professor Yash Ghai after consultations with the people and yet the Fiji government ignored it, burning printed of the printed People's Constitution, and forced their illegal Khaiyum version of the Constitution on the people. "What we find objectionable" continued Raju, "is New Zealand giving support in terms of funding to the public consultation which is not going to bring about any change to the form the bill as it has been written and which will be imposed on the people of Fiji." Raju called on New Zealand to withdraw its funding and recall the high commissioner to "ask him what's going on". New Zealand has a lot of educated people so their actions suggests that they don't give a damn about the oppressed people of Fiji. What seems obvious is that New Zealand is more concerned about their trade with Fiji, as if it won't improve under a truly elected democratic government. Fiji buys over $320 million worth of New Zealand's products each year. This makes NZ's $US5.4 million funding for the Police Bill [over four years] a very cheap investment for a $320 million return! The Fiji Times, 9 March 2021 - Let us know of medicine ‘shortages’
Rajend Naidu from Sydney asks how can a country with such a progressive leader as Jacinda Ardhern be connected in any shape or form with the post coup police force in Fiji, which since the coup has effectively been under military control (all the while pretending to be an independent and impartial state institution in a democracy)?
A man from the military was brought in to be police chief sidelining all senior police career officers. New Zealand claims it did not have any role in the drafting of the draconian Fiji Police Bill 2020 which has all the hallmarks of the modus operandi of a police state. New Zealand claims that for the last four years, together with UNDP, it has been engaged in strengthening the Fiji Police Force's professionalism. Oh, really! And how's this working out? The proposed draft Fiji Police Bill with its assortment of arbitrary police powers over the citizenry makes a thinking person wonder what impact New Zealand had in developing a democratic culture in post coup Fiji? Or, was New Zealand just going through the ritual motion - by throwing good money - to show its superficial commitment to good democratic governance in post coup Fiji. Be that as it may one thing is certain the ordinary people of Fiji must feel very let down by NZ and UNDP. The Guardian reported that a Catholic nun Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng had knelt in the dust of a northern Myanmar city, begging a group of heavily armed police officers to spare the children and to take her life instead.
“I knelt down...", said the nun, "begging them not to shoot and torture the children, but to shoot me and kill me instead”. This takes a lot of courage! The nun deserves a Medal of Honour, a Victoria Cross for her bravery! Her act of bravery in the city of Myitkyina, says the Guardian, came as Myanmar struggles with the chaotic aftermath of the military’s overthrow of the civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on 1 February. But the junta has steadily escalated its use of force, using teargas, water cannon, rubber bullets and live rounds, as protesters demand the return of democracy. Protesters took to the streets of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin state, wearing hard hats and carrying homemade shields. As police started massing around them, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng and two other nuns pleaded with them to leave. It was at that point that the 45-year-old nun fell to her knees. Moments later, as she was begging for restraint, the police started firing into the crowd of protesters behind her. “The children panicked and ran to the front … I couldn’t do anything, but I was praying for God to save and help the children,” she said. First she saw a man shot in the head fall dead in front of her – then she felt the sting of teargas. “I felt like the world was crashing,” she said. “I’m very sad it happened as I was begging them.” Meanwhile, in Fiji..... Fiji's dictator Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama who dropped out of form 4 [year10] told Legend FM News that former PM Mahendra Chaudhry and the CSO Alliance are seriously not worth answering to as they are just trying to be relevant by making such statements.
Bainimarama said “tell them to go ahead and do something useful if not for themselves then for their neighbours.” But the CSO Alliance for COVID 19 Humanitarian Response has been very useful! They have been helping communities across Fiji, providing assistance to people since COVID-19 began. Especially when Fiji's incompetent Bainimarama government is broke and unable to help many people in need! The result of over 14 years of Bainimarama and Sayed-Khaiyum's mismanagement, corruption, theft and koco-practices! So it's rather stupid of Bainimarama [but not unexpected of him] to say that the CSO, made up of the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development (FRIEND), Fiji Women's Crisis Centre [FWCC], Citizens Constitutional Forum [CCF], Social Empowerment and Education Programme (SEEP), Rainbow Pride Foundation and the Fiji Women's Rights Movement [FWRM] is not relevant! They are very relevant! The CSO and Chaudhry had called for Fiji's corrupt AG Sayed-Khaiyum to be put on medical leave and an acting appointment be made to look after the important portfolios. They also asked for clarification on who was paying for the highly corrupt Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s travel costs. Chaudhry said that Sayed-Khaiyum had been away overseas for over two weeks undergoing serious medical procedures in Singapore, according to his own statements. So the normal practice in cases where a Minister is away from a country, more so when on medical treatment, is to appoint an acting minister to take charge. It's absurd, continued Chaudhry, for the Prime Minister to allow Sayed-Khaiyum to manage the economy and several other ministries under his substantive charge from his hospital bed 5,209 miles from Fiji. Surely there are other senior ministers in his government who can be appointed to act in the position. It would be very interesting if a senior minister was appointed to act as Minister for Everything! What dirty deeds would the acting appointee uncover!....Or would they soon be replaced for trying to do the right thing! Over 125,000 people in the tourism sector lost their livelihoods because of COVID-19 with many across the country pushed into poverty. The tropical cyclones also devastated many homes leaving victims to seek help.
But after 14 years of corruption, lies and mismanagement the Bainimarama government could only offer very little, if at all. Because the Bainimarama government is broke! The best the broke Bainimarama government could do was to tell workers to use their own FNPF retirement savings! Over 60,000 FNPF members have zero balances with many struggling to make ends meet! Assistance, however, for many of these families came from and continue to arrive from fellow citizens and foreign donors. This post is a special thank you to Allen Lockington and Narayan Reddy [depicted in the cartoon] and to their gang of volunteers from Kava Place Parliament, and not forgetting the many other similar groups and individuals, who have been out and about organising, collecting and distributing assistance to fellow citizens in need. From food packs to wheelchairs and school books, the Kava Place Parliament team has found willing donors ready to do their bit to help out in whatever way they can, big or small, it all helps. So here’s a big VINAKA VAKALEVU to you all – volunteers and donors, you know who you are!! May the good Lord continue to bless you for your kindness towards our fellow citizens in their time of need. Just imagine if you take a loaf of bread from a shop anywhere in the Pacific, but you tell the shop-keeper that you are not going to pay for the loaf of bread until they fix up their management! Yeah, you know exactly what the shop-keeper will tell you and probably do to you in response!
This scenario, writes Prof Wadan Narsey in his article “USP: the illusion of Government grants” (ed. in FT 24/10/2021), is exactly what is happening at The University of the South Pacific, the premier regional university, The Fiji Government is a minority shareholder in USP. It isn't even the majority contributor to USP’s budget, even if the largest proportion of USP’s students are from Fiji. Yet the childish megalomaniac Fiji AG Sayed-Khaiyum acts like his corrupt Government is the major shareholder and contributor. Especially when he arrogantly tells the USP Council that Fiji is not going to pay its bill to USP until his “conditions” are met. This is blackmail! What many may not know is that the corrupt Sayed-Khaiyum is not threatening to withhold a grant. Sayed-Khaiyum is actually refusing to pay USP for teaching Fiji Government sponsored students. This is just like you telling the shop-keeper you won't pay for the bread. The USP Council would be perfectly entitled to sue the Fiji Government, says Prof Narsey, or inform the students to go elsewhere (after paying for what they have already received). This is probably the best time for the USP Council to relocate its administration away from Sayed-Khaiyum's interfering childish temper tantrums in Fiji, to a more suitable location like Vanuatu. |
