FijiLeaks' editorial indicates that Lieutenant Colonel Jone Kalouniwai committed perjury when he lied in court saying that there was no evidence on Khaiyum's corrupt deals. BUT Kalouniwai had already given Bainimarama all the documents relating to Khaiyum's shady deals with Tappoos and Latifa Investment Ltd. However, all these files have since mysteriously gone missing from the Registrar of Companies Office in Suva.
Senior officers stated that Bainimarama had numerous meetings with Khaiyum prior to Khaiyum being introduced to the members of the military council. Council members stated that Bainimarama told them that he was getting "legal" advice from a "very smart" source, but did not reveal who the source was. They claim that Bainimarama told them that his source had already explained a plan for the military to run Fiji for the next 50 years, with elections to be held after 20 years. Members of the military council insisted on meeting this source. They wanted to know who was providing Bainimarama with advice. When they saw that it was Khaiyum, they were so disappointed! The council advised Bainimarama on numerous occasions to remove Khaiyum. Bainimarama just kept telling them that he would remove Khaiyum, but never did. The military council's plan included Fiji going to elections within a year of the coup. But Bainimarama had other ideas and kept coming up with excuses. He was also always on the phone talking to Khaiyum. Then afterwards Bainimarama issued instructions to the military council... most of the instructions going against promises made by Bainimarama to the people of Fiji. What will be interesting in Brigadier general Pita Driti's trial is whether the "whole truth and nothing but the truth" will be revealed and if Khaiyum's corrupt judge and court system will allow the whole truth to be told. Sources say that Bainimarama has "briefed" the military officers who are state witnesses in the trial.
