We have seen this all before, and again this year with the New Zealand and Australian foreign ministers visiting Suva to check on progress towards holding military-dictated-elections in Fiji. They went, they saw, they are now bending over and planning to relax sanctions on the dictatorship that is holding Fiji hostage since 2006!
Michael Field reports that NZ's Murray McCully said that "We want to take a glass-half-full approach". Suggesting that what the lying, corrupt dictatorship has been spinning about the elections being free and fair and "wonderful" are steps in the right direction. Irrespective if the election will be rigged in favour of the dictator. This is rubbish! They just want elections held and whomever is pronounced the winner [either by hook or by crook] will be supported as the legitimate rulers of Fiji. This strategy is the act of clueless and spineless individuals. Not leaders. Any rigged election result will not be accepted by the people of Fiji and it will create resentment and hatred that will be bottled up and fester to a point that when the pressure reaches that human "limit", it will explode in another coup. But, by this time the pressure, built on hatred, anger and resentment and oppression, will have multiplied and manifest itself in something brutal and very unpleasant. As seen in the Arab Spring. Col Gaddafi ruled Libya with an iron fist, but he too was overthrown by the people fed up of the oppression, corruption, brutality, poverty and lies. But it did happen. Fiji is no exception this rule! FijiLeaks shows in its editorial, Spineless Bunch, that the security situation in Fiji was explained in a briefing paper to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Foreign Ministers on the 28th of November 2006, prior to their 1 December 2006 meeting in Sydney, Australia. And days before Bainimarama's December 2006 coup. But the group decided to do nothing besides stand aside and utter empty words and apply soft sanctions. Now they are relaxing the already soft sanctions even further. The foreign minister's group, has visited Fiji many times and offered advice and encouraged the dictator, who is holding Fiji hostage, to hold general elections - irrespective if they are fair and free. There was a glimmer of hope that Australia's new Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, would provide new life into the group. Unfortunately, this was only wishful thinking. Some old timers argue that the visits are a good thing - shows the oppressed people of Fiji that they are not totally forgotten and that the eyes of the world are watching. Others suggest it is a waste of time, especially when the key players of the group, Australia and Nz, have the ability to hurt the bainimarama dictatorship via stronger sanctions. Similar to the effect of their stronger sanctions placed on Fiji after the 1987 coup. Ratu Epeli Nailatikau's puppet, Rabuka, was forced to hand back power to the a civilian government after sanctions took its toll, So why not do it again? ....yes, why not? This question was put to DFAT, MFAT and to the President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. ACTU president refused to respond. DFAT are still looking into it, and MFAT replied in "waffle". A business man also highlighted a key point, that the funds sent for the Constitution Commission, headed by Prof Ghai, was not a total waste. It did have a positive impact. It enabled the people of Fiji to voice their views in over 7,000 submissions rejecting the immunity provisions demanded by the dictator. The people also outlined their views for a better Fiji. Fortunately, Prof Ghai was not interested in corruption and being a puppet to his arrogant and egotistical student Kahiyum. Prof Ghai was about doing his job correctly, so his megalomaniac student, Kahiyum, had the Prof removed and then forced his [Kahiyum] illegal constitution on to the oppressed people of Fiji. All this took place in full view of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Foreign Ministers group. But don't hold your breath - in this case the needs of the few far out weigh the needs of the many. The message is that Only the people of Fiji can remove the dictator Bainimarama from power.
