Sources report that the Government is deliberately understating the number of deaths caused by dengue fever so as not to scare away potential tourists.
Apparently Khaiyum's interference in health department policy and a lack of adequate funding resulted in the failure by the department to keep an eye on the larvae of the mosquito carrying the dengue fever virus. The national adviser for communicable diseases, Dr Mike Kama, said there were 6659 suspected dengue fever cases recorded as of February 16. Of these suspected cases, 2589 were tested positive while two confirmed and two suspected dengue deaths were recorded by the health authorities, said Kama. The total number of cases of dengue fever is expected to exceed 17,000. Meanwhile Bainimarama and Khaiyum are redirecting funding to fix roads in an attempt to buy votes before the election. It seems that Bainimarama is more concerned about only providing "visible" services that people can see. This is simply to buy votes. Those dying from dengue fever are not a priority as they will not be able to vote.
