A number of people are upset at reading what Professor Yash Ghai said during a November 2012 interview with Crosbie Walsh. In the interview, Professor Ghai says that there is a government in place in Fiji. It’s been governing the country for several years. Life goes on. We have to accept for better or worse that this is the situation.
This is hard to accept especially when we think that the illegal military junta is being seen as the official government of Fiji. We all know that the coward and lying murderer Frank Voreqe Bainimarama overthrew the legal and democratically elected government of Fiji to save himself from being arrested and prosecuted for treason, murder, sedition and a list of other crimes. But Professor Ghai is correct. Fiji is being governed, unfortunately its by a poorly educated and "nako" thug, and life goes on. This is a fact but it still doesn’t stop that sickening feeling from running though our system when we hear it. How can the murdering dictator be seen as the government of Fiji especially when we all now know that Bainimarama is nothing more than a lying, murdering and treasonous criminal who is running from the law. Bainimarma even jumped on the back of a pregnant women killing her unborn child for goodness sake! So how can this be, we ask. The fact is that bainimarama and his military junta are the current government of Fiji, together with their corrupt and thieving relatives, friends and parasites. A Government is simply the executive policy-making body of a country. Whether they were legally elected into office or if they manipulated the army into illegally overthrowing the democratically elected government. The point is that bainimarama and his thugs are in control of the nation’s affairs and administration because the oppressed people of Fiji have not stood together to stop them. Bainimarama is a despot, which is when a single entity rules with absolute power. Despotism can mean tyranny, which is what Bainimarama is doing in Fiji through threats of punishment and violence, or dictatorship where Bainimarama is absolute ruler that is not restricted by a constitution, laws or opposition. Both terms apply to bainimarama. And with all opposition to bainimarama suppressed through intimidation, fear, beatings, sodomy, murder, draconian decrees, corruption and false charges, bainimarma is free to do what he pleases while the country is held hostage. But life does go on in Fiji and bainimarama and khaiyum continue to rob Fiji of its resources and build their wealth from corrupt deals and lies. All this while Fiji’s economy is reduced to its lowest point ever in our nation’s history, along with the highest levels of national debt, highest level of unemployment, highest suicide rate, highest levels of corruption and non-transparency, lowest levels of investment, etc. Yes this is all terrible but bainimarama and his thugs are allowed to do so because the people of Fiji are too afraid to stop it from continuing. We all can see from recent events that Bainimarama and khaiyum have no intention of giving up power and why should they if they can get away with it. So bainimarama’s junta will continue to do what it pleases while the people of Fiji struggle to make ends meet. Or until the people standup together and say enough is enough! The people of Fiji did voice their objection during the constitution consultation process. Especially objecting to the non-negotiable immunity provisions of the new constitution, which is essential to bainimarama and khaiyums escape plans. But Bainimarama and khaiyum have another trick up their sleeves. They intend to submit their own constitution prepared by khaiyum and falsely claim that it was drafted by Prof Ghai’s Constitution Commission. Khaiyum will also prevent the public from seeing Prof Ghai’s draft constitution. Then bainimarama’s handpicked Constituent Assembly stooges will endorse khaiyum’s constitution claiming that it was indeed drafted from the peoples submissions to the Constitution Commission. Besides we all know that bainimarama is a first class liar and who is holding the country hostage through his military goons with guns. So yes we get upset at hearing Professor Yash Ghai say that Fiji has a government and life goes on. But the reality is that Professor Ghai is correct because Fiji is being governed, although it is by a despot with a military junta but they are governing Fiji. Life goes on - unless the people stand together against the few thugs holding Fiji hostage.
