The union representing sugar mill workers in Fiji says soldiers have appeared at the Lautoka mill in a clear effort to stop a strike going ahead. See full story in FijiToday blog.
Intimidating and threatening workers is a sign of mismanagement, corruption and of idiots operating well outside their depth. Bainimarama and Khaiyum, who are responsible for finance and sugar, have no clue about what they should be doing, so they need to force people to do as they have commanded. This is not the sign of a person who is concerned for the people of Fiji, like what Bainimarama pretends to be. It shows the actual picture of what Bainimarama really is about. A man running from the law and stealing as much as he can get for himself at the expense of the people of Fiji. Applying intimidation and threats on the sugar workers is just a regular part of Bainimarama's mentality. Bainimarama and Khaiyum have attempted to fool the sugar workers into accepting a 5.8% pay increase when the worker's wages, in real terms, had declined by 40% in the past seven years - ever since Bainimarama took Fiji hostage in Dec 2006. Meanwhile, since Dec 2006, the salaries of both Bainimarama and Khaiyum have increased far beyond 700%. The auditor general's report can prove this, but Khaiyum has banned it from being published. At least until he and Bainimarama are "voted or placed" in office (by hook or by crook) and then they wont care about what the people think.
