January 2023The Fij iTimes reports that Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) Limited Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s employment status has been terminated. This was confirmed in a statement by FBC's new chairman Ajay Bhal Amrit.
Vimlesh Sagar will be acting CEO. Riyaz is the brother of Fiji's former self-imposed, megalomaniac minister for everything Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum who recently managed to get himself kicked out of Parliament and from the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) because of his sheer arrogance and incompetence as a lawyer. He was appointed by his brother Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to the position of CEO without any proper recruitment process or management experience. The FBC’s official website had jumped the gun, reported Fijileaks, and had announced Riyaz’s appointment before the Board had made a formal announcement. The then chairman of the board David Whippy told the media, “The problem is that the Prime Minister's [Bainimarama] office has changed the conditions, and we were not told about the announcement. PS Parmesh Chand said Riyaz was recommended by the Board and endorsed by Bainimarama, continued Fijileaks, “the advertising, shortlisting, interviews and recommendation of appointment of a suitable candidate are all made by the board (FBCL). They are, with the support of the Public Enterprise Minister [Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum], submitted to the Prime Minister for endorsement." Matters such as a conflict of interest were non issues as far as the office of the Prime Minister was concerned. Basically, the law of the dictator ruled supreme in post-coup Fiji, reported Fijileaks. In 2011, Aiyaz Khaiyum abolished the Higher Salaries Commission [HSC] that determined the salaries for people holding senior positions in government and state owned enterprises [SOE] because they would not approve an increase in salary for Riyaz [reported a Senior Public Enterprise source]. Under Riyaz, the FBC had been making loses, nor did he have the requisite qualifications and experience to justify an increase, reported the source. So Aiyaz moved this responsibility to the Board of Directors of the SOE that would need his approval as the Minister responsible for Public Enterprises, and it would then be endorsed by the [puppet] Prime Minister Bainimarama. Cabinet had based its decision to abolish the HSC on a submission by Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who said "the Commission is in existence since 1983 which lacks commercial understanding and sufficient knowledge of the market forces, and tends to apply a public service approach and comparison in determining the salaries of the entities". Grubsheet said in its FB post that the real surprise to most Fijians will be that the FBC CEO [Riyaz] earned more than the former prime minister, and that he had recently billed the national broadcaster $200,000 for a new car. The gravy train comes to a shuddering halt, with gravy splattered all over the reputations of Riyaz and his younger brother and enabler. Qiliho and Kean suspended, finally!FBC News reported that both Fiji's human rights violator Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho and convicted murderer Fiji Correction Services Commissioner Francis Kean have been suspended, effective immediately, pending investigation and referral to and appointment of a tribunal.
Both men are reported to be suspended on FULL pay. President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere suspended Qiliho and Kean on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission. The President appointed:
Fiji’s new PM Rabuka who carried out Fiji's first two coups, offers his "friend" former dictator Frank Bainimarama, who carried out his military coup in 2006 to avoid being arrested for his crimes of treason, sedition and the murder of fiver CRW soldiers, Rent-Free government accommodation.
Wow! Crime pays! The Fiji Times reported that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka had revealed on his official social media Facebook page that Opposition Leader Voreqe Bainimarama will be provided an official quarters rent-free. What a joke!! $400 million went missing under Bainimarama's 16 year's of dictatorship, as reported by the Auditor General. Then there's the long list of corruption, bribes, human rights violations, lies, land theft, over 1200 who died from COVID, the highest cost of living, the highest levels of unemployment and poverty created by Bainimarama's corrupt leadership, and not forgetting Bainimarama's crimes of treason, sedition and the murder of five CRW soldiers. Yes, the people voted for change to remove Bainimarama and end his oppressive dictatorship, and to get justice. But instead of arresting Bainimarama after coming into office and starting an investigation into his alleged list of crimes, Rabuka offers his friend rent-Free accommodation. Bloggers suggest that maybe Rabuka wants Fiji to forget Bainimarama's crimes, and in doing so, Rabuka's own hidden crimes will not come to light with Bainimarama's silence. With his record, the only Rent-Free accommodation Bainimarama deserves is in Naboro Prison. fijivillage.com reported that FijiFirst Party General Secretary and megalomaniac MP, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was no longer a Member of Parliament after he was nominated to be a member of the Constitutional Offices Commission by his puppet, the leader of the Opposition Voreqe Bainimarama, and attended the first commission meeting virtually.
Section 63 (1) (b) of Sayed-Khaiyum's illegal Fiji Constitution states that the seat of a member of Parliament becomes vacant if the member, with the member’s consent, becomes the holder of a public office. Bainimarama then said that Khaiyum would remain as the General Secretary of the FFP, but Section 14 of the Political Parties act says that Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum would have to resign from FijiFirst if he continues as a member of the Constitutional Offices Commission. Section 14(4) states that any public officer who intends to be a member of, or hold office in a political party, must resign from the respective public office prior to applying to become an applicant or a member of, or hold office in, a proposed political party or a political party. Khaiyum resigned from the Constitutional Offices Commission with his puppet Bainimarama saying that he would be leading the charge for the FijiFirst party from inside Parliament while Sayed-Khaiyum will be doing FijiFirst work from outside Parliament. What a joke! In just a few days, Sayed-Khaiyum managed to get himself booted out of Parliament and from the C.O.C. This is further proof that Sayed-Khaiyum' is by no means a smart lawyer nor is he a smart-kaindia. It's time to remove the Immunity Clause
A picture says a thousand words, and this picture says that "Crime pays", especially in Fiji, where staging a Coup and supporting a coup pays well. You will just need to jump over a few hurdles and put on your best Hollywood performance ever. Fijivillage reported that the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major General Jone Kalouniwai had paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka who carried out Fiji's first coup. He was accompanied by the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, a retired Lt-Col who was once a senior member of the former ruling FijiFirst dictatorship before he was booted out and jumped over to the Opposition. All three men benefitted from Fiji's coup culture [that includes promotions, increased salaries and status, and perks] some more so than others, and they continue to benefit thanks to an immunity clause that has no place in Fiji's Constitution, or in any constitution. And after 16 years of dictatorship, Fiji has replaced one coup leader Bainimarama and his group of supporters with another coup leader Rabuka and his group. It's now Rabuka and his group's turn to enjoy a well paid job and good lifestyle, which sends a terrible message to our young aspiring men and women. It says, an alternative pathway to a good job, salary and way of life, even to become PM, an MP, Speaker or President, is to join the military, support a coup, change sides as often as you need to whomever is winning, and pretend you give a crap about the people and the rule of law using big fancy words. And don't forget to apologise as often as is needed, like it's your Oscar Award moment, and along the way, slip in that God told you to do it. Meanwhile, all the victims of Fiji's coups who were assaulted, cheated, robbed and those who suffered from worse crimes, just have to move on with their lives while the real culprits get off scot-free. What a joke! It's easy to apologise for committing and supporting treason when you know that you have immunity from prosecution and won't face the death penalty. Remove the immunity, and the intensity and sincerity of any apology will have another meaning. So any apology given under the protection of an immunity is a meaningless, empty gesture meant as a ruse to appease the masses. If any person is really, truly, sorry, then they should not hide behind an immunity clause, and come out and face their accusers in an open court. This is the only way to stop Fiji's coup culture. It's time for the immunity clause to be removed. The Fiji Sun reported that the People’s Alliance (PA) and the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) had said that they would consider releasing the 2000 coup maker George Speight and others if they were voted into Government. Now that PA and SODELPA are a part of the new government, Fiji’s new Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has outlined a process to release them.
Speight, in exchange for an early release in early 2006, had offered to reveal all he knew about the 2000 coup, even naming the key players involved and those who financed it. This did not sit well with Frank Bainimarama who objected strongly to the idea. Yes, we can't wait to hear what Speight and his group have to say about the 2000 Coup and who all were the key players behind it. We also hope that they spill the beans, holding nothing back, it's the only way to get to the bottom of that mess. Unless, of course, there are secret deals made to silence the truth to protect certain corrupt, nasty, individuals. This would be a damn shame if it happened. It would also mean that the new Coalition government was willing to protect corrupt individuals. Speight has spent more than 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to treason in February 2002, and was sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment the same day. Remember, Bainimarama's biggest lie was that he had saved Fiji in 2000. He did not. He was a part of the coup. Bainimarama had deliberately lied to his Commander in Chief, the then President Ratu Sir KKT Mara, that there was nothing to worry about, despite reports of a possible coup, and then he left to attend a useless course in Norway. While he was away, Bainimarama ordered his elite CRW soldiers into parliament, bluffing that it was only an exercise to remove the democratically elected Chaudhry government. The reality of the matter, that it was not an exercise, kicked in for the CRW when the first shot was fired in the parliamentary chambers. Bainimarama was behind the devastation of the 2000 coup, and the events which led to those fires and all the pain and sufferings. But, when the coup failed, he quickly deflected blame on to his loyal soldiers and had them arrested, beaten, tortured and imprisoned. What a two-faced coward! Here's an excerpt from Michael Field's article, a chapter from Speight of Violence: inside Fiji’s 2000 coup, by Michael Field, Tupeni Baba and Unaisi Nabobo-Baba (Auckland/ Canberra 2004] Death by hanging Monday 18 February 2002 A year after the coup, courts got down to business. George and Jim Speight, Silatolu, Nata, Ligairi, Josefa Savua, Duvuloco, soldier Apenisa Rovutiqica who had harassed reporters outside Parliament, and five others were charged with treason, alleging that they did 'together and with other persons unknown, between the last day of May 2000 and the 27th day of July 2000 inclusive, at Suva, in the Central Division and in other places in the Central Division and elsewhere in Fiji, conspire to overthrow the Government of the Republic of the Fiji Islands as established by law and for that purpose and in furtherance thereof did use unlawful force and other unlawful means'. The charge contained 13 'overt acts' which covered key details of the coup, including taking hostages, declaring an illegal government, abrogating the constitution, fomenting civil commotion, murdering policeman Filipo Seavula and seizing military arms, all 'in order to deploy potential, threatened or actual force against the Government of the Republic of the Fiji Islands as established by law. ' Temo opened a committal hearing, sitting in the room which had been the original Assembly Rabuka had overthrown. Gerard McCoy opened for the state, saying the prosecution only had to prove a single overt act against any one individual to successfully hold the treason charge against that individual: '13 accused, 13 overt acts, 169 combinations' . The plotters were traitors who planned to blow up banks, sink ships and seize Mara. They had wanted to dynamite Parliament and the Westpac and ANZ banks in central Suva, as well as issue petrol bombs to Fijian youths to attack shops and to watersiders to sink ships. Speight had attended meetings at Duvuloco's home in Mitchell Place, and at the last had confirmed firearms and soldiers for the coup would be available. McCoy said many of the weapons used had seen service in the 1987 coups: 'a classic case of recycling'. McCoy said during the hostage period Ligairi 'brutally grabbed' Chaudhry and, holding a gun to his head, threatened to shoot him at any time. Chaudhry was beaten up by Fijian youths in the Parliament so badly that he needed to be put on oxygen that night, McCoy said. Ligairi was 'hysterical' for much of the time... The new Coalition government is getting things done.
Deputy PM, Bill Gavoka announced that Fiji Airways And ATS Workers who were dismissed by the previous Bainimarama government are to be given their jobs back. What a relief for many who have been struggling to make ends meet. The PM, also said that Ministers and Assistant Ministers will receive a further 10% pay cut. Newly appointed chair of the PSC Luke Rokovada, said that Civil Service employee Contracts will be phased out and replaced with permanent appointments, with the retirement age extended to 60 years. This is being submitted to Cabinet. Here is an interesting excerpt from Professor Wadan Narsey's blog “Khaiyum’s Animal Farm continues, post election” (4/1/2023).
Despite losing the 2022 Elections which were tightly managed by Khaiyum’s own stooges, according to his own electoral rules (including one national constituency with 5% thresholds and anonymous ballot papers), a pliant Supervisor of Elections, a pliant FICAC and pliant judiciary plunging their daggers into the hearts of Opposition candidates, Khaiyum contemptuously continues the nightmare that he has visited on Fiji for the last decade or more, through his bull-shit 2013 Constitution. It is a tragedy that Rabuka and the Opposition Parties are having to work within it in the meantime until their long term judicial review takes place. Of course, there may be short-term Machiavellian gains for the Coalition Government to use Khaiyum’s own rules against him (“hoist him by his own petard” or poetic justice) as the Speaker is currently doing by disqualifying Khaiyum as MP for accepting appointment and taking part in the meeting of the Constitutional Offices Commission. But Fiji’s long term nightmare will not end until that 2013 “Constitution” is consigned to the dustbins of history and Fiji society reverts to genuine law and order under the 1997 Constitution, the only legitimate one currently. Note that the smart collaborators in Fiji’s nightmare over the last sixteen years have long gone from centre stage, and will soon be joined by the Master Puppeteer (Bainimarama’s smart kaida, who has seen the writing on the wall despite the bluster that he gets his Puppet to mouth. But sadly, large segments of the population, especially the masses of Indo-Fijians who voted for Bainimarama and Khaiyum, will not be able to avoid the nightmare recurring for them into the future as their share of the voting population continues to shrink and they become increasingly irrelevant in future elections. “What you sow, you shall reap”. I suspect that the pieces of paper the 2013 “Constitution” is printed on might be too smooth to even use as toilet paper, just like the smooth expensive paper used for the hundreds of thousands of copies of John Samy’s Peoples’ Charter. Many of us are still fuming from the years of corruption, looting, lies, hurt and human rights violations by the former Bainimarama government run by that lying, two-faced megalomaniac Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. This includes the liu muri and back-stabbing by individuals. To simply pause or stop our emotions won't be easy because our anger and resentment demands justice, and we want it now! This is us being human, but we need to pull the brakes, and take a pause.
What we need to remember is that there is a new sheriff in town, a new Prime Minister Rabuka, who is going about setting up the proper processes, procedures and investigations with his new government. They will get to the bottom of all the Bainimarama and Khaiyum corruption, debt, looting and human rights violations, etc. This will take time. It may not be at the speed we want, but it's getting done. So we must pause our anger and support Rabuka and his team, and trust that they have a plan which is already underway. We need to support their efforts and not place obstacles in their way. Pausing our hurt, sorrow and anger is easier said than done, but we need to give them time. After all, we voted for them to get the job done, and don't forget that we are no longer under a corrupt and brutal dictatorship, we are free once again. So please, let's allow the new Rabuka team to implement their plan, and trust their judgement to give us a prosperous 2023. |
