FijiLeaks reports Professor Brij Lal's analysis of the crude behaviour and outbursts of Fiji's illegal and self appointed AG, Khaiyum!
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says Prof Lal, characteristically continues to give moronic, self-deluding answers to difficult questions. When asked about the well-publicised videos of police brutality seen across the world, he says: ‘You know, police brutality is not confined to Fiji. I’ve got a report at home about Aboriginal deaths in custody.’ Does that justify what happened in Fiji? Why compare yourself with the worst of another country? What he forgot to mention is that there was an extensive and independent judicial inquiry into the tragic events in Australia, and the perpetrators were brought to justice. An investigation was promised in Fiji, but no one knows anything about it. Things were brushed under the carpet as the dictator Bainimarama brazenly promised to‘stand by my men.’ And those who were convicted of murders and manslaughters soon found their way back into the community through the expedient use of the Compulsory Supervision Order. It is for good reason, says Prof Lal, that Marks describes Sayed-Khaiyum as ‘ruthless, authoritarian, and vindictive’ who actually runs the country day-to-day while Mr Bainimarama ‘swans around the islands and hobnobs with new allies.’
