UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations turns blind eye to murderers & Human Rights abusers6/20/2013 The United Nations Department of Peace Keeping Operations will turn a blind eye to any Fiji soldier guilty or involved in murder or Human Rights abuses. So long as Bainimarama says the soldiers are clear. This coming from Bainimarama who is guilty of treason, sedition and has broken every promise he has made since overthrowing the last democratically elected Government of Fiji. And the rot continues......
According to Michael Field, a UN spokesman told the New York based Inner City Press, which monitors the UN, that the Fiji regime will do its own checking. This despite the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressing shock over the content of a video showing the apparent torture and inhuman and degrading treatment of two handcuffed men in Fiji. On the one hand the UN is shocked and on the other, they are willing to overlook murderers and Human Rights abusers working on UN missions. A majority of Fijian soldiers are NOT murders or guilty of Human Rights abusers. There are only a few rotten ones that eagerly carry out murders, Human Rights abuse and evil deeds on their fellow country men and women - as ordered by their illegal Commander Bainimarama. The UN is using rhetoric to get around this issue. The same UN spokesman also told the Inner City Press that “It is the responsibility of the government of the Republic of Fiji, as with all troop-contributing countries, to ensure that its personnel have not been convicted of, are currently under investigation for, or being prosecuted for any criminal offence, including violations of international human rights law or international humanitarian law.” Okay, but what about the UN's obligation to ensure that it abides, at all times, by its own rules and obligations?.............. This mere act of letting Fiji, whose dictator is clearly guilty of murder and Human Rights abuse, determine which of its soldiers qualify is really fascinating, given the number of PhD's and world "experts" employed at the UN. It seems they are all working in silos and chasing their own agendas. Anyhow, only a few nations have been willing to provide the number of soldiers that Fiji has. Therefore, the UN is being forced to lower its standards and overlook some of its own rules and regulations. Officers who had joined Commodore Frank Bainimarama’s coup were previously banned from UN service, as have soldiers accused of human rights abuses, including the deaths of coup opponents. Apparently, this will no longer be the case. Now Fiji will be sending 170 soldiers to the Golan heights, between civil war-torn Syria and Israel. They will replace 377 Austrian troops in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which has monitored a ceasefire between Israel and Syria since 1974. This mission will bring better income to the families of the 170 soldiers and it will also provide much needed remittances to Fiji's poor economy which is the result of Khaiyum and Bainimarama's corruption, mismanagement, theft of native lands and government funds, etc. The Fiji troops are good at the peace keeping work that they do and Fiji will send troops to UN missions, whether it is under a dictatorship or not. The reputation of the Fijian troops was built on Fijian bravery and the quality of the officers that led them. Bainimarama was never a part of this effort. Bainimarama had abandoned his men to save himself, at the first sound of shots, at the start of the November 2000 mutiny. He also soiled his pants while escaping through the casava patch - a total embarrassment to the uniform and to the brave soldiers of the RFMF. Not all of the officers and rank and file subscribe to Bainimarama's treasonous objectives, corruption and thuggery. Being in the RFMF is a job for them that puts food on their tables and pays their bills. Unfortunately for the soldiers and the country, they are being dictated to by Bainimarama who is not the legal Commander of the RFMF, is highly corrupt and who also has his own soldiers and citizens threatened and beaten if he even thinks that they oppose his dictatorship or ideas. The action by the UN also makes Australia and New Zealand's efforts, to stop the use of Fiji troops in UN missions, somewhat wasted. But they must not stop. Australia and New Zealand must continue on with their efforts to stop the use of Fiji troops in UN missions. Not until Fiji has truly returned to democracy, with a free and fairly elected government and a totally free and independent judiciary.
